Our leisure centres in Wimbledon, Morden and Mitcham provide a variety of recreational activity programmes and opportunities for us all to exercise, stay healthy and have fun.
We also pride ourselves on our engagement with our local community. This year GLL, operator of Better leisure facilities, was the premier health and fitness partner of Sport Relief, with over £365,000 being raised across the company. Across Merton, Better leisure facilities raised over £8,000 for Sport Relief, demonstrating the Merton partnership’s commitment to working with the local community and making a difference both locally and on a wider level.
Wimbledon Leisure Centre and Spa has benefited from an upgrade to the health and fitness area and a £250,000 development on both swimming pools, as well as Spa London now being the leading spa in Merton after its £1.5m investment.
Canons Leisure Centre has seen the completion of the floodlit multi use games area at the rear of the centre providing space for 6-a-side football and other games as well as the £200,000 health and fitness development which was completed in June 2014 which as well as adding more equipment and space has also created a new look and feel to the centre.
Morden Park Pools is the only centre that offers a provision for diving in the borough whilst also offering a range of swimming facilities and a fully equipped gym at affordable prices.
Tyron Fuller is the general manager of Canons Leisure Centre. He commented on how proud Better is to once again be sponsoring the 2016 Merton Community Awards: "As a charitable social enterprise we are always very happy and proud to be sponsoring these awards, as empowering and supporting our local community is one of the focal parts of our business.’’
AHMADIYYA MUSLIM COMMUNITY
For more than 127 years the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been leading a peaceful revival of Islam. From the time it was founded in India in 1889, by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad it has enjoyed an unrivaled record for peace and has worked to build cohesive societies. It is led by its Caliph, His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who unites the community and directs its global efforts for peace. The UK chapter was established in 1913, and it built London’s first mosque in 1926 (The London Mosque in Southfields). It now has 130 branches across Great Britain and its mosques include the landmark Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, which is the largest mosque in Western Europe.
A community that stands for education, integration and interfaith peace it welcomes all to visit its mosques as well as its numerous seminars and outreach and community events that bring people together to promote social harmony.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim community also actively helps others through raising funds for charitable causes and volunteering in local, national and international community projects and is keen to play its part for the good of mankind. Over the years, it has raised millions of pounds for UK-based charities and is proud to be the sponsor of the Merton Volunteer of the Year Award 2016.
MCDONALD'S CENTRE COURT
I am extremely proud to be able to sponsor this year’s Community Award. There are so many people across the borough that deserve recognition for the tireless work they do to make their communities better places to live. I hope this award goes some way to applaud the unsung heroes of Merton.
As a local businessman in Merton, I see first-hand the importance of volunteering from the work many of the staff from my restaurants do in raising money for charities such as Ronald McDonald House in Tooting, which provides a home away from home for families from across south London who have children sick in hospital.
