The Merton Cup is up for grabs this weekend when a team from the African Caribbean Cricket Association (ACCA), based in Mitcham, take on a local side.
Taking place on Sunday, September 10, the competition was originally the idea of a cricket fan and former Mayor of Merton Council, councillor David Chung, and helps raise money for the mayor’s charities, Merton Mencap and Commonside Community Development Trust.
The match will be played on Mitcham Cricket Green, a ground which has existed since 1685.
The ACCA is said to be committed to keeping the game of cricket alive among the younger generation as well as encouraging more black fans at cricket grounds.
Councillor Marsie Skeete, Mayor of Merton, said: “It should be a great family day out and money raised through the raffle will go to my chosen charities.
“The association does a lot of good work trying to encourage more people into the sport and it would be great to see a full house.”
The match starts at 1pm on Mitcham Cricket Ground, Mitcham, CR4 4FH.
