Crime on buses travelling through Merton has fallen by nearly a quarter since last year, new figures have shown.

The Metropolitan Police said bus-related crime was at an eight-year low across London, with offences in Merton down by 24 per cent overall in 2011/12, compared to 9.4 per cent overall in the capital.

Criminal damage is down by 44 per cent, theft is down by 33 per cent, and violence against a person is down by 27 per cent.

London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, said: "Our transport system plays an essential part in the lives of millions of Londoners and I understand exactly how important it is that we continue to make it safer for our passengers.

"The latest figures are pleasing but more can be done and we will not relent from our focus on making buses safer, ensuring uniformed officers are highly visible and curbing anti social behaviour."
