A jubilee beacon will be lit this weekend to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Councillor David Williams, the Mayor of Merton, will light the beacon on Monday, June 4, at a free community event in Morden Park.

Residents are being invited to bring a picnic to the event which will feature a funfair, food, drinks, ice cream and live music from headline acts, The Bikini Beach Band.

Organised by Merton Council, the beacon lighting will take place at 10.15pm, between the lighting of the beacons along Hadrian’s Wall at 10.12pm, and at 10.20pm with beacons linked with churches of all denominations, cathedrals, the Salvation Army and the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple of the UK.

Councillor David Williams said: “We look forward to our residents coming along as part of our borough’s celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee.

“The long weekend will give us all a chance to enjoy being with our families and friends, while celebrating all that Merton has to offer.”

Merton Council cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “There will be 2,012 beacons lit for the Queen across the UK, and it’s up to us in Merton to make sure ours is one of the most memorable. Come and have fun!”
