A man tried to snatch a woman's baby by wrestling away its buggy from a woman in broad daylight, it has been confirmed.
Police were called yesterday at 1.40pm to Merton High Street, Colliers Wood, to reports of a man trying to take the baby in its buggy.
A witness said the man was seen running away near the river Wandle, in Wandle Park, and was pursued by builders who saw the incident.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A man has approached a woman pushing a baby in a buggy.
"He attempted to make off with the buggy, but he was challenged and ran off."
It is believed that the victim and suspect knew each other, while police do not believe the incident is related to other attempted abductions this week in Surbiton or Worcester Park.
No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information about the incident can contact police on 101.
