Merton Council held a special event to mark the successful completion of the Wandle Valley Low Carbon Zone (LCZ).

The event on May 17, borough together about 100 people involved from all over the community, including residents, schools, contractors and councillors.

The LCZ effort brought the borough together and is helping make Merton a cleaner, greener environment.

Residents have told the council about the advantages the LCZ has provided, including cutting the amount of carbon dioxide created, saving them money on their energy bills and making the borough more environmentally friendly.

The council is also proud of another LCZ success which involved helping 11 young people to get jobs and develop their skills for future careers within the green sector.

Future plans by Merton Council include the Green Deal in October, which will provide a route for residents to reduce their energy consumption by investing in energy efficiency improvements at no up front cost.

Merton cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: "It’s been very rewarding to see how enthusiastically our residents have responded to being part of the LCZ and how people from all walks of life have got involved.

"Although we are sad to see the end of this successful project, the future is brighter because of what we have learnt and we are going to continue building on its success with future plans."
