Almost 100 older Brownies recently attended an Activity Day at Heyswood campsite. The girls came from all corners of the County of Greater London West including Sutton, Cheam, North Cheam, Carshalton, Merton Park, West Barnes, New Malden, Teddington, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Kingston, Berrylands, Wallington and Worcester Park!
The activities which were to aimed at giving the girls a taste of some outdoor activities they can expect when they move from Brownies to Guides, included shelter making, collecting wood, making fires and cooking kebabs, sausages and bananas and finishing with a traditional camp fire sing-along.
‘I hope that we have giving them an insight into what being a Guide involves and that they will move up from Brownies to Guides in their next step in their Guiding journey’ said Kate Bloor, Guide Leader and County Camp Advisor..
The girls certainly seemed to have enjoyed the day listening to some of their remarks as they were collected by their parents ... 'I can't wait to join guides now!’ ... ‘I really enjoyed collecting fire wood’ .... ‘I didn’t know you could cook bananas on a fire!’ Girlguiding UK is the UK’s largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women, with almost 540,000 members and recognised volunteers. Over a third of girls and young women (aged 7-21) in the UK are involved in guiding, or have been in the past and almost half of all the women in the UK have been involved in guiding at some stage in their lives.
Girls join Girlguiding as Rainbows (5-7 years), Brownies (7-10 years), Guides (10-14 years) and Senior Section (14-25 years), enabling girls and young women to develop their potential whatever their ability or background.
Girlguiding UK is part of a worldwide Movement of approximately 10 million girls and young women in 145 countries. For further details contact www.girlguiding.org.uk Based on information supplied by Steve Wicks.
