A man was hospitalised after being assaulted with a piece of wood in the early hours of this morning.
Police were called to Montague Road, in Wimbledon town centre, at 2.42am this morning (May 12) to reports that a man in his 30s had been attacked.
The man was taken to St George's Hospital, Tooting, after suffering from a broken ankle and facial injuries.
A Merton Police spokesman said one man has been arrested for grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.
Police believe a fight had taken place between a group of men who knew each other.
Earlier today, a Metropolitan police spokesman said the victim had been "struck in the face with a piece of wood".
A cordon was in place this morning, which meant there was no car access to Montague Road from Wimbledon Broadway.
