The Queen will be marking her Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year with a Royal lunch in Mitcham.

Residents are being encouraged by the council to line the streets on May 15 to welcome Her Majesty and Prince Phillip as they arrive at St Mark’s Academy, in Acacia Road.

The Royals will attend a “British-themed” picnic with all 13 of south London’s mayors.

The South London Lunch, organised by Merton Council and St Mark’s, will bring together community representatives to celebrate local achievements.

Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender, mayor of Merton, said: "We are both honoured and privileged that the Queen has chosen to visit Merton in her special year of celebration.

"We are sure that the people of Merton will all turn out to line the streets to share in this momentous occasion."

Residents wishing to greet the Queen should line the streets of Cedars Avenue and Tamworth Lane in Mitcham between 11.30 to 12pm and 1.30 to 2pm.

A special film is also being made to document the Queen's visit with residents being encouraged to take part by sending in videos of themselves sharing their thoughts about the Royal visit and of the day itself.

The final film will be shown at the Wimbledon Odeon in the autumn.
