The Queen is coming to Merton in May to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.

Her Majesty's visit with the Duke of Edinburgh will take place on May 15 as part of a regional tour to commemorate 60 years on the throne.

The last time the Queen came to the borough was in June 2010 to watch Andy Murray play at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Before then, Queen Elizabeth II had not visited Merton for 33 years.

As well as Merton, she will visit Richmond and Bromley.

The official Jubilee Weekend will be June 2-5, and Merton Council will celebrate on Saturday 2 June on Three Kings Piece in Commonside West, Mitcham.

The council's chief executive, Ged Curran, said: “We are honoured that the Queen has chosen to visit Merton to mark her 60 years on the throne.

"The Jubilee year will be remembered by people up and down the country for many years to come.”

This year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations include a number of honours being gifted by the Queen in recognition of her 60-year reign, which has prompted some to call for Merton to become a Royal Borough.

This month, Greenwich became the Royal Borough of Greenwich in recognition of their long association with royalty.

The leader of Merton Council, Stephen Alambritis, said in February 2010 that Merton should be given the same Royal status because it lays claim to the only place outside Westminster Abbey where a King or Queen of England has been crowned in the last 1,000 years.

In February 2010, Coun Alambritis said: “Merton has so many royal connections and I think a powerful case can be made.

"It will raise the profile of the borough and establish it as more than just a name but a real place with a history to be proud of.

More details about the Queen's visit will be released over the coming months.
