A festive fair has left customers feeling more humbug than ho, ho, ho, prompting complaints about everything from its plastic ice rink to a lack of Christmas cheer.
The Winter Wonderland in Wimbledon Park, which opened in December until today, left some customers with an underwhelming experience.
Visitor Lisa Fordrey said: “It was a complete disgrace.”
But a spokesman for the event said that most customers were happy – with some coming back on more than one occasion.
Many visitors have paid £10 a person for entrance and ride tickets at the fair, which opened in the Revelstoke Road park on Saturday, December 17.
Mrs Fordrey, from Sutton, visited the Winter Wonderland on Sunday, December 18, with her husband and 10-year-old son.
But she criticised the “completely basic” rides and lack of festive stalls and attractions, as well as the muddy ground – which she described as a quagmire.
She said: “It was really disappointing... No Christmas trees and no Christmas spirit.”
The attraction’s synthetic ice rink has also come in for criticism.
In an online review of the rink, visitor Sean Hodges said: “Unfortunately it is nothing like ice for skating, and after 10 minutes of struggling to slide, alternating with falling over on the muddy wet surface, we gave up and came home.”
But the fair was defended by spokesman Perron Coubland, who said: “We’ve had a lot of people come up to us and thank us for doing it.”
He said the fair offered families a cheaper and more convenient alternative to similar events in central London. He said there had been some problems with the fair, but he hoped it would return to Wimbledon next year – with a real ice rink.
