By Councillor Stephen Alambritis, Leader of Merton Council (Labour, Ravensbury ward)
I was disappointed to read in the letter from Councillor Mary Burstow on Sutton Council about the purchase of Olympic tickets.
In it she neglects to make clear that, for Merton, the decision to buy the tickets was a cross-party decision which included her own party, the Liberal Democrats.
The four parties took the decision that the mayor of Merton in 2012, as first representative of the borough, should be invited, given that Merton is a host borough for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sutton may have a different view to purchasing tickets, but they are not a host borough.
The headline to the letter Mayor must offer to pay, may lead readers to think the decision to buy the tickets was taken by the mayor’s office.
This was not the case.
Indeed, neither the previous mayor nor the current mayor will benefit from these tickets.
Whoever is mayor during London 2012 may even decide to return the tickets.
