Director Damian Cruden’s critically acclaimed production of The Railway Children starts previewing on Sunday June 19th – press night June 28th - at The Waterloo Station Theatre with the magnificent 66-tonne steam locomotive, Stirling Single, as the star of the show. Comedian, writer and actor Marcus Brigstocke leads the cast as Albert Perks, the station porter with Pandora Cliffford as Mother, David Baron as the Old Gentleman, Mark Holgate as Jim, Elizabeth Keats as Mrs Perks, Tim Lewis as Peter, Stephen Beckett as the Father and Doctor, Amy Noble as Roberta, Blair Plant as Shepansky, Amanda Prior as Mrs Viney and Cook and Grace Rowe as Phyllis. They are joined by ensemble members Francesca Ellis, Felicity Houlbrooke and James Rigby.
The Great Northern Railway 4-2-2 No 1 (Stirling Single) was built in 1870. It was designed by Patrick Stirling - Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Great Northern Railway - as an express passenger locomotive and was built at the Doncaster Works, the same factory that built the Flying Scotsman. Stirling Single will pull in the Gentleman’s Carriage which appeared in the 1970 film and will be used in the theatre production.
