Long-awaited hospital re-developments are at risk again as health bosses race against time to secure cash for the multi-million pound scheme.
Plans for the relaunch of the Wilson in Mitcham and the Nelson in Merton Park as local care centres (LCCs), with a range of treatments and services, must be pushed through at agressive speed before funding body NHS London is dissolved in June 2012.
NHS Sutton and Merton admitted its timetable presents risks to the scheme - but said it needs to act fast because of uncertainty about whether cash will be available in 12 months time.
The trust, which will control health spending in the two boroughs until the responsibility is handed to GPs in 2015, said it must submit planning applications and business cases to reach "financial closure" on the scheme before next June.
A spokesman said: “We don’t yet know what arrangements will be in place for capital schemes once NHS London has been dissolved and therefore we must recognise the risk of delays or uncertainty.”
The creation of the two LCCs, alongside two others in Sutton, is part of a £215m shake-up of healthcare in the area. Last year questions were raised over the future of the scheme, after the discovery of financial problems at the trust, but it was given the all-clear after a review earlier this year.
A trust spokesman said it had appointed an experienced team to manage the project and tackle any risks. They said the LCCs will include GPs surgeries, x-ray and ultrasound scanning and mental health services and other facilities - and would aim to provide integrated healthcare and better support for those with long-term conditions.
