An early morning fire at a laundry has been blamed on a piece of fabric catching fire at the top of a chimney.
Three fire engines rushed to the Sunlight Laundry on the industrial estate on Deer Park Road, south Wimbledon, at about 3am this morning, Saturday, May 21.
However, when they arrived they found the problem was “a bit of smoke in the ducting”, and the fire was already out.
No-one was injured in the incident, and there was little or no damage.
A fire investigation unit was attempting to confirm the cause of the incident, but a spokesman for Wimbledon fire station said: “It was literally a duct problem – some bit of cotton got caught and overheated, and caught fire at the top of the chimney. It was out by the time we got there.”
In January, firefighters from the same station rescued a man who got trapped in the folding machine.
He had been trying to free some trapped sheets, but had not turned the machine off first.
