By Mrs M. Blackwell, Cochrane Road, Wimbledon
In response to Councillor Walker’s letter about Wimbledon House School, why has the Council only just woken up to the fact that they own the site?
Why have they left the building to become derelict over the last six years?
Why didn’t they start to renovate it when it became obvious that there were too many children in the borough?
Why is it only now when a private organisation wants to turn it back into a school that they are “exploring whether the site can help us meet the needs of the primary school expansion scheme”?
They shouldn’t be “exploring”: they should be pulling their finger out to refurbish the building and re-open the school rather than trying to break a long-standing legal covenant in order to expand Dundonald Road School into the precious green space of Dundonald Recreation Ground.
It must be cheaper to renovate an existing building than to build a new extension thus saving council tax payers money.
