By Councillor Iain Dysart, Merton Council (Leader, Liberal Democrats and West Barnes ward)
At this time, many will be congratulating Councillor Gilli Lewis-Lavender on her election as mayor of Merton for the forthcoming municipal year.
I would add my voice, both as leader of Merton’s Liberal Democrat group, and as a fellow ward councillor, albeit from a different political party.
Those who follow these things will know that in the recent past, West Barnes ward has become a very tight contest in local elections between Liberal Democrats and Tories.
Gilli has long been a formidable political rival, who I have known since, I think, 1998.
Despite our differences, however, I have always had great respect for the work she has done and find her very approachable.
While we will remain opponents politically, she has a caring nature as well as a deep interest in the life of the borough.
Her decision to support a wide range of charities therefore does not surprise me.
I am sure she will do a fine job as first citizen of our borough.
