In the three years I have been visiting the beautiful gardens at Cannizaro Park, I been perplexed by the sad state of birds in the aviary. Despite the greenery surrounding the cage, there’s not so much as a bunch of leaves inside their sterile home. The natural habitat of these birds would be rain forest, not desert. It must be perpetual torture for them to be able to see so much lush greenery beyond the wire that imprisons them without being able to touch, taste, or hide in it.
Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to keep a few container grown shrubs that could be put into the aviary on a rotating basis to enhance the quality of life of these poor birds. A gentleman I spoke to this afternoon said the aviary once used to house dozens of birds. Now there appear to be only three. Surely something could be done to make the remainder of the survivors’ pitiful lives a little more comfortable.
