A team of adventurers have triumphed in their bid to drive a fire engine around the world.
Wimbledon man Steve Moore led the nine-month fundraising challenge in memory of his father, a fireman who died of cancer.
The trip through five continents finished in Greenwich on Sunday – as the team’s fundraising total passed the £100,000 mark. They are now waiting to be confirmed as the holders of a new world record for the longest journey by a fire engine.
On Monday Mr Moore said: “Yesterday was the highlight. It was emotional, a crazy moment.”
His father, Dorset fireman Garth Moore, died of lung cancer in 2009. The trip has raised cash for Macmillan Cancer Support, the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and the Fire Fighters charity.
Its last leg has seen the team travel through Morocco, Spain and France – taking in the street markets of Casablanca and picking up Mr Moore’s mother in Paris for the final sprint.
The crew had to contend with road accidents, breakdowns and visa and immigration hold-ups as they completed their epic 30,000 mile voyage through 28 countries.
Mr Moore, a 33-year-old city worker, said: “Each and every border was huge for us.”
He was joined by 24 friends at different points in the journey, who paid their way to ensure all donations went to the challenge charities.
Their adventure saw fire engine Martha drive across the deserts of Mongolia, over Sydney Harbour Bridge and through Time Square in New York.
