A historic London pub has reopened after undergoing a huge, six-figure refurbishment.

The Cheshire Cheese, based under Fenchurch Street Station’s railway arches, closed at the beginning of August to begin its facelift.

But on Wednesday, August 28 the pub reopened with a VIP night, reopening to the public the following day.

A local band called The Order even took to the stage to keep customers entertained on the big day.

The Cheshire Cheese is now part of the Stonegate Group, and its facilities have been “upgraded” which the pub claims will lead to two new jobs being created for the community.

The pub started trading back in the 1600s and remains open today.

As part of the refurb, pub leaders aimed to “enhance the pub's offerings while preserving its historic charm”.

It will now have extra TV screens meaning it has nine in total to make sure that sports fans don’t miss out.

Sports lovers can also test their darts skills now that a dartboard has been implemented.

Dog lovers will be pleased to know that their four-legged friends are welcome at the Cheshire Cheese, with pub leaders claiming it is a popular spot for dog walkers thanks to it being such a short distance from the river Thames.

An “enticing range” of cask ales has also been added to “further improve the pub’s beverage offering” with a rotating range of casks to make sure beer lovers “always have something new and appealing to try”.

There will also be low and no alcohol options for those looking to enjoy something different.

Accompanying the drink offerings, the Cheshire Cheese boasts a “best-in-class food offering, with sharers, small plates, burgers and pub classics making up just some of the many tantalising treats available to guests”.

Mark Murphy, General Manager of the Cheshire Cheese, said: “These renovations are in line with Stonegate’s commitment to always improve and innovate, enabling us to enhance our guest experience.

“The renovations have improved our warm and welcoming atmosphere while developing the community feel of the pub.

“We’re confident in our competitively priced top-class beer range, our new and improved facilities allowing for a more comfortable and enjoyable pub experience, and alongside the best darts room in town, we know locals are going to love the new-look pub.”
