A nature club in Wimbledon helped children to explore the natural world on their doorstep in a New Year walk.
Wimbledon Common Nature Club, in partnership with the London Wildlife Trust, participated in a January 7 session titled Life Under the Microscope.
Led by Quekett Microscopical Club, the children and their families looked for and collected interesting natural specimens, such as twigs covered with mosses and lichens, leaves, and water samples from muddy puddles and ponds.
At the Information Centre in Wimbledon Common, Paul Smith, Barry Wendon and Alan Wood from the microscopical club guided the children to use their microscopes to study the collected items.
The group were also given the chance to look at Star Sand from Okinawa, Japan, spices, and insects encased in perspex provided by the microscopical club.
Auriel Glanville, Wimbledon Common Nature Club leader, said: "We had a lovely morning to go exploring and the children were so excited to see this microscopical world opening up before their eyes.
"We said a very big thank you to the Quekett Microscopical Club."
The club's next session, Bird Feeders, is scheduled for Sunday February 4, at 10am at the Information Centre.
