PICTURES show empty shelves as supermarkets were hit by the UK border ban which was imposed over the weekend.
Shoppers were left scrambling the shelves in search of fresh fruit and vegetables in Sutton and Merton on Tuesday evening ( December 22).
The lack of food comes as France shut its UK border for 48 hours on Sunday following the new strain of coronavirus.
Thousands of Lorries remain stranded following the border closure which has sparked stock shortages and panic buying.
At the beginning of the week, retailers raised concerns that supply of some fresh produce, such as lettuce and broccoli, could be impacted by the disruption.
However, supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Tesco said that they had "plenty of food" for Christmas available in stores.
Shelves at Sainsbury's Wallington and Asda in Mitcham were stripped bare on Tuesday.
One woman took to Facebook to slam shoppers who had flocked to Tesco A217 and "ransacked" the shelves on Tuesday.
She reported that there was a long queue outside and told those who were still waiting "not to bother".
It was announced today ( December 23), that France has ended its ban on UK arrivals on the condition that drivers test negative less than 72 hours before departure.
Thousands of lorries remain stranded in Kent at the time of publishing.
A race has begun to clear the backlog of which could take days to resolve.
