Plans to refurbish and bring back to life a Mitcham pub have been submitted.
In a planning application to Merton Council on behalf of landowner Gateway Realty Limited, 20 new flats would be built to the rear of the White Hart in London Road as part of a four-storey development.
A "minor demolition" to the rear extension of the site would also take place, but the currently closed pub would remain in working order as well as receiving a refurbishment of its own.
Tony Burton, secretary of civic society Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage, was delighted that the White Hart might open once more.
"We welcome plans that will restore the White Hart as a public house at the heart of Cricket Green," he said.
"This listed treasure needs the most sensitive treatment.
"We are concerned that the planned flats should not damage the view of the White Hart from Cricket Green or be visible from Lower Green West."
Of the 20 proposed flats, eight would be deemed affordable, which is in line with Merton Council goal for 40 per cent throughout the borough.
There would also be eight car parking spots and room for 37 bicycles.
