Former Wimbledon schoolboy Tom Holland is set for the biggest moment of his high-flying career as he stars in the latest reboot of the Marvel Comics superhero film Spider-Man.
The 21-year-old plays Peter Parker – aka Spider-Man – in the Sony/Marvel movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is released next week.
Born in Kingston, the 21-year-old attended Donhead Preparatory School in Edge Hill and Wimbledon College.
While a pupil at Donhead, Tom trained for his role in musical Billy Elliott, according to former headmaster Chris McGrath.
He said: “He began his ballet training here for his role in Billy Elliot, and he had ballet classes in the school gym once a week.
“He was a wonderful Donhead boy, full of enthusiasm for school life and extremely talented in many areas. He was a good kind friend for all.
“He was one of Donhead’s finest and a source of great pride for us.”
Tom – who learnt to dance at Wimbledon’s Nifty Feet Dance School - made his West End debut as Michael, Billy’s best friend in 2008. Just 12 years old at the time, his talent was spotted when Donhead performed as part of Richmond Dance Festival.
He later attended The BRIT School, and has had parts in film The Impossible, and BBC One’s Wolf Hall.
Spider-Man is the most successful franchise in the history of mega-studio Sony Pictures, with its five films having taken more than $4 billion worldwide.
Before Tom, the most recent actor to pull on the blue and red spandex was Epsom-raised Andrew Garfield, who studied at Priory Preparatory School in Banstead and starred in two The Amazing Spider-Man films in 2012 and 2014.
Tom made his debut as the wall-crawling, web-slinging superhero in last year’s blockbuster Captain America: Civil War.
Speaking to us in 2015 ahead of the release of his Ron Howard-directed film In the Heart of the Sea, Tom told us his life had not changed much since the casting.
He said: “When I come home I’m still Tom, I still have to do the dishes and clean my room. I’m probably the same person I was two years ago.
“I can see my life changing on the horizon but right now I’m just taking every day one at a time and enjoying walking down the street and stuff.”
There’s little doubt his life will have changed by now but, then at least, Tom said he was relishing the great responsibility that came with his newfound great box office power.
He said: “You need responsibility, it’s part of being human. This is a big responsibility and superheroes always say they have a lot of responsibility.
“I’m just excited to get to work. I know that the people who are working on the film are incredibly creative, the Marvel team are fantastic and are doing an excellent job with everything they have created.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the 16th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and comes out on July 7.
