The Mayor of London’s recent announcement that body worn cameras will be rolled out to 20,000 Metropolitan Police officers is largely welcomed.
Body worn cameras will help to capture evidence at a scene of an incident and may also improve public trust in the police.
However, they must be used correctly.
It’s essential that both the public and officers understand the rules on when incidents should be recorded.
The Met must also conduct thorough training to prevent misuse and ensure officers do not unnecessarily infringe on people’s civil liberties.
Without these, we risk undermining the trust we seek to build.
