Today is the day the nation decides who will be the next prime minister and in Merton, who will represent them in parliament as MP.

After weeks of hectic campaigning Conservative parliamentary candidate for Wimbledon, Stephen Hammond, and Labour’s Mitcham and Morden candidate Siobhain McDonagh, will nervously await the results to see if they will remain MPs for the next five years.

Our reporters Louisa Clarence-Smith and Becky Middleton will be at the counts at Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham tonight with candidates as the votes are counted and hopes are dashed or dreams fulfilled.

Follow their live coverage on this website and on Twitter.

And follow them on @wimbledonnews and @louisawimbledon and @becky___m for all the up-to-the-minute coverage as the votes are counted throughout the night.

Wimbledon Times:

Confused about who to vote for today? There are two constituencies in Merton - Wimbledon, and Mitcham & Morden.

Looking for your votes in Wimbledon are Stephen Hammond for the Conservatives, Shas Sheehan (Liberal Democrats), Andrew Judge (Labour), Charles Barraball (Green Party), and Peter Bucklitsch for UKIP.

In the Mitcham & Morden area, Labour’s Siobhain McDonagh, Paul Holmes (Conservative), Diana Coman (Liberal Democrat), Mason Redding (Green Party), Richard Hilton (UKIP) and Des Coke for the Christian Peoples Alliance are all vying for your vote.

Whoever you pick locally will have an impact on the national picture, with each party hoping for the most MPs elected to make up an overall majority to form a government.

We have carried out in-depth interviews with each candidate to help you get to know them better.

Which candidate is a criminal barrister? Which one has six grandchildren? Who likes skate-boarding?
