A dedicated teacher has been nominated for an award after facing challenges head-on and emerging successfully out the other side.
Lee Matravers, an early years and P.E teacher at Joseph Hood Primary School in Raynes Park, stepped into the breach as early years leader when the school was asked to create space for 30 extra places recently.
He has been nominated in the best teacher category by chairman of governors Posey Furnish.
Mr Matravers, who worked at the school between 2008 and 2012 before returning, said he was drawn back to the school and loves working there.
The 31 year-old said: "It is such a great school to work at.
"The kids are lovely and it is such a supportive team."
He has helped to raise the profile of P.E there and increased a Merton Sports Mark award from a bronze rating to a silver and in some areas to a gold rating.
"I am shocked and surprised and pleased obviously to be nominated.
"It is really nice to be recognised," he added.
Mrs Furnish said his classroom was always an inspiring and happy place to be, and his gentle and intuitive approach helped even the most reluctant child to grow into a confident learner.
He will go head-to-head with colleague Claire Hudson in the same category.
There is still time to nominate someone special.
