The Volunteer Centre Merton is delivering a new financial capability project to help young people in Merton manage their cash.
The Barclays Money Skills ‘Champions’ run on London Road, Mitcham, is aimed at helping 16 to 25 year-olds from the area get to grips with budgeting, loans and saving.
Ellie Germaine, Youth Action Coordinator at Volunteer Centre Merton, said: “We’re very excited to be running this project and extremely pleased to see our first group of 12 ‘champions’ complete their training.
"This project gives young people the chance to equip themselves with the resources and tools to build their confidence and improve their own financial skills, as well as sharing this knowledge with their friends and peers.”
The project has already trained over 2,600 young people countrywide to manage their own personal finances, as well as sharing their knowledge with over 70,000 of their peers.
Participants are provided with support to build their own financial skills and confidence and to get to grips with managing their money more effectively.
Before they become ‘champions’ of the project, they are trained to pass on their newfound skills and knowledge to their friends and peers, enabling the programme to touch the lives of some of the hardest-to-reach young people in the country.
Young ‘champions’ in Merton will be supported by Volunteer Centre Merton to design and deliver workshops, leaflets and drop in sessions to help young people address how they could manage their money more effectively.
By 2014, the project aims to train 5,000 champions and reach 100,000 young people nationwide.
