Plans are emerging to build a cinema in Mitcham as part of the regeneration the town centre.

Councillor Peter Walker, who represents Figge’s Marsh ward, has written in support of redeveloping the Sibthorp car park, near Fair Green, as part of a recent consultation on how to regenerate Mitcham town centre.

He said he has also received an expression of interest from a national cinema chain and had put them in touch with council officers.

Coun Walker said: “I am keen to hear from local people what they think of exploring a joint approach by the council to private sector cinema companies to develop a new cinema adjacent or near to Fair Green as part of the £2.5M regeneration scheme.

“I believe the new residential developments on the nearby Gas works site and the station at Mitcham Eastfields make this area attractive for a commercial cinema.“

He added the improvement scheme was in danger of failing without the council providing a new community hub after the closure of McDonalds in the summer.

A consultation, called Rediscovering Mitcham, ended last week and asked residents what improvements could be made to revitalise shopping, improve traffic management and improve the look of the town centre.

Funding for the project has been provided from the Mayor’s Outer London Fund, Transport for London (TfL) and the council.

The next part of the consultation is a series of workshops in Fair Green from January 8 to 15. For more information email rediscovermitcham@merton.gov.uk.
