Hot under the collar? We have all fans ablaze in the Lady Wimbledon office. Based in Wimbledon Village we tend to do most our business in the Rose and Crown summer garden, buzzing about the previous evening’s events and planning the next party.
On the eve of summer solstice, we held a spectacular event at Cannizaro House hotel, sampling Hotel Du Vin’s summer menu. With 200 guests dressed in white and the local parrot swooping over the crowd outside, it was a stunning sight.
Ignoring my own dress code, I wore a yellow outfit picked for me by Ela London, with Bee Smith Milliner, based in Kingston, creating a strawberry head-piece to give my outfit a Wimbledon tennis flavour.
My dear friend Jason Burrill, Celebrity Big Brother winner from Celeb FC (a non-profit agency founded by Karin Flower, that organises influencers to play football and attend events supporting UK charities) made quite an entrance, arriving in his white Ferrari and matching outfit.
Once guests had their photo taken on the red carpet they were drawn in towards the sound of chilled trance music by Taylor Torr, otherwise known as Vibes.
Cannizaro’s bar area was stacked full of fresh seafood, from oysters and prawns to crab from their summer menu. Outside, the Wimbledon Brewery flags were flying above their notorious truck as they served their brand new Wimbledon Pale Ale, which is being launched throughout the tennis season. Next to them, was Hotel Du Vin’s BBQ, offering mini hamburgers, hot dogs, tuna skewers and halloumi skewers.
As the late afternoon turned to dusk, the guests were delighted to see Mikey the Macaw, a vibrantly blue and yellow parrot and resident of SW19 enjoying the summer sky. In sky high heels, I was dared to run with Mikey across Cannizaro Park to see him take off from my arm. It would have been an incredible sight, but that bird did not budge and I had to do the walk of shame back to his owner Nimal.
Inside the glorious Orangery, Britain’s Got Talent 2016 Grand finalist, Wayne Woodward, was ready to start his live set. Singing jazz hits like Sinatra’s Way You Look Tonight and Somewhere Beyond The Sea, his powerful voice blew everyone away.
From press, residents, local business owners to Sky sports presenter Michael Kurn, everyone joined the sea of white to watch. Even DJ MC Kie flew straight in from the airport after performing in Majorca.
It was a beautiful party, held in support of local charity Jigsaw4U, who support young people and their families through difficult experiences. Without question, in my mind, it was the perfect way for Wimbledon to begin celebrations for the Wimbledon Championships.
